Get exposed in your local media! IT WORKS!
Folks,
Last summer I was interviewed by a local (or regional) magazine about my coffee roasting operations out of my garage! It was a phone interview and I can tell you it was a lot of fun. I didn’t pay much attention to it at the time. The magazine went out of business. Just a few weeks ago (mid-December or so) I got a call from another magazine that was rescuing the interviews from the failed publication. They were interested in my story and wanted to send a photographer to “my garage”. I said GREAT, come over! They came and they jus published an article about coffee roasters in my region. Ever since day one I got some sales both here at Bonanza and through my own website.
This is the article: http://tinyurl.com/4s6khzr
Anyway, all of this came about because I started to talk about my business a lot to friends, family and neighbors. Some key individuals (and I don’t know how) got interested and then I got the call last summer. I know that not everybody can get their stories in a local magazine or publication but I think that, with just a little effort in informing our own community and circle of influence, we can get some good exposure to the general public and increase traffic and sales on our on-line businesses here at Bonanza.
It may work or it may not work for you but I just wanted to share this with you just in case it does!

Not selling a lot here but doing it somewhere else? Use this good advise!
Folks, I have implemented many of the suggestions posted in this forum. I can tell that I have made some sales and I can attribute them to the things I have done after reading this forum. So, I wanted to share some of them here at our blog. Read on!
What follows is directly quoted from the forum post by jsgeare @ Bonanza booth http://www.bonanza.com/booths/jsgeare:
"I’m guessing that Good Dog has many REPEAT customers. And I’m guessing that most customers, like most people, are creatures of habit. They’re familiar with eBay, so they USE eBay. And the longer you stay at eBay, the more the habit is reinforced.
So… Here’s what you need to do:
Bear this in mind: your news letters MUST be interesting, non-commercial, fun and quick to read, well-written, and richly illustrated. Like mine (www.ezbizwebsite.com -select newsletters link). If they are NOT, your customers will unsubscribe, same as YOU would.
That’s a lot of homework and it does assume you already have the asset base of repeat customers. If you do NOT, then maybe the coffee isn’t so good. By I assume it is excellent coffee. The games, blogs, special deals and similar stuff that is internal to Bonz do not reach the existing customers who are outside Bonz. You need to go directly to your customer. This is no different than moving a physical store from one place to another. You have to tell them you are gong to tell them, then tell them, then tell them you told them.
You can do this. I did."

So… Here’s what you need to do:
- Pick a date that you are going to shut down eBay operations.
- Harvest your customer email addresses from Paypal.D ownload PP history, dump it into a spreadsheet, get rid of non customer transactions, sort by email address or name, get rid of duplicates. There’s your list.
- Set up an email service so you may communicate with all of them at once. (I use Vertical Response, but there are others). Upload your customer email list to the service.
- Write a newsletter. Honest to goodness news, not advertising. Talk about coffee, how to grow it, roast it, brew it, etc. Talk about the dog pictures on the bag. Tell coffee stories (Did you know that it was a cup of strong Turkish coffee that gave Winston Churchill so much energy that he bombed Dresden? That sort of thing). And include a story on your move to Bonz. Explain why, explain the benefits to the customer. Don’t say WHEN you will shut down eBay, just say you will tell your customers when the time comes. Publish the newsletter as a pdf file. Put it at some place that let’s you host pictures, etc. or use your own web site.
- Send an email to yur customers, announcing the newsletter and giving them the link to it.
- The idea here is to acclimate your customers to hearing from you directly, outside the confines of eBay.
- Change your bag packaging to include your Bonz booth address. Include an instruction to go the Bonz (specific booth item, if possible) to re-order their coffee. Play it up! “As featured on Bonanza.com!” That sort of thing.
- Back on eBay, begin changing item descriptions to give a link to a website (your own, ideally) to “learn more about our coffee here…”
- To conform to eBay rules, do NOT include any item for sale on the landing page from the eBay link. HOWEVER, it is perfectly legitimate to include other links on the landing page that DO go to items for sale.
- Gradually eliminate duplicate listings (same item listed on Bonz and eBay).
- Publish a SECOND newsletter (about a month after the first one). On this one, annouce the date that most eBay operations will be shut down “owing to ever higher fees and comlicated rules,” etc. GIVE THE DATE (about a month into the future).
- However, leave one or two items on eBay simply to maintain a presence there, with the out-links to your web pages.
- Buy “adwords” on Google to direct people to your Bonanza booth.
- A few days before the shut-down date, send an email reminder to your customers.
- When the big days comes, PULL THE HANDLE!
